Psychological evaluation is a powerful tool that can assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of various psychological and developmental conditions. Palmetto Psychological provides testing and evaluation services to help clients and their families better understand their strengths and needs in overcoming the challenges they are facing.

This evaluation is for clients with concerns about their attention and executive functioning abilities. The ADHD evaluation includes an intellectual assessment, self-report and collateral report of ADHD symptoms, assessment of attentional capacities, and evaluation of executive functions (i.e., the ability to plan, organize, and solve problems).  A screening of social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment is also conducted in order to rule out other causes of attention problems.

This evaluation is for clients with concerns related to communication, socialization, repetitive behaviors, and/or difficulties adapting.

We provide autism evaluations for children (30 months and older) and young adults. The evaluation includes an assessment of cognitive functioning (e.g., memory, learning efficiency, processing speed, auditory processing, visual-spatial processing, abstract reasoning, verbal skills, etc.). It also includes direct observation and may include administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and/or MIGDAS-2 structured observation techniques. Additionally, testing will also include exploration of other possible causes for the individual’s symptoms as well as possible co-occurring diagnoses.

This evaluation is appropriate for young clients (k5 and below) with concerns about developmental delays and/or school readiness. Evaluations include assessment of development in five areas: cognitive development, communication development, motor development, social emotional development, and self-help skills.

Estimated time with provider: 4 to 5 hours, including time for interview and feedback session.

This evaluation is for children and adolescents needing a comprehensive psychological evaluation for diagnostic clarity and to assist with treatment planning due to concerns for social, emotional, or behavioral functioning.

Estimated time with provider: 4 to 5  hours, including time for interview and feedback session.

This evaluation is appropriate for clients with concerns for specific learning disorders (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia), ADHD, autism, emotional functioning, and/or intellectual disability in the context of academic or school settings.

Estimated time with provider: 7 to 8 hours, including time for interview and feedback session.

Please note that educational testing is typically not considered “medically necessary” by most insurers.

This type of evaluation is for clients seeking updated assessment of academic skills (only) for educational purposes. It is designed for clients who have been comprehensively evaluated within the past three years by a licensed psychologist and have no new concerns (for example, a new diagnosis) that they would like addressed during the evaluation.

Estimated time with provider: 4 to 5 hours, including time for interview and feedback session.

The type of testing is for clients who need specific testing (such as administration of a comprehensive IQ test) for admission to an independent school or program.

Estimated time with provider: 2-3 hours, including time for brief feedback session.

Clinic-Based Consultation services support clients or their families in determining next steps in addressing their concerns for themselves or a loved one. For example, is an evaluation needed or should other avenues be considered first or instead?

School-based consultation services are designed to support learners in overcoming educational challenges (academic, behavioral, social, emotional, etc). Consultation services can be requested by parents or schools and are tailored to the specific circumstance for which they are requested.

Consultation services include but are not limited to attending IEP or 504 meetings, conducting observations, conducting functional behavioral assessments (FBAs), developing behavior intervention plans (BIPS), etc.

Dr. Shands provides clinical supervision services with a focus on psychological testing and evaluation for neurodevelopmental disorders and school-based practice. Supervision and potential practicum placement is available to students enrolled in graduate training programs (School or Clinical Psychology) on a case by case basis. Supervision is also available for post-doctoral clinicians seeking supervision as required for licensure through the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Psychology.
